Congresswoman Erin Houchin of Indiana has introduced the Abortion Funding Awareness Act. This act serves as a companion piece to a Senate bill led by Senator Jim Banks. The aim of the legislation is to provide transparency regarding the use of Medicaid funds in connection with abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood.
The proposed legislation seeks to ensure that American taxpayers are not unknowingly paying for abortion-related services. It also calls for greater accountability from state governments regarding the expenditure of federal funds.
“The Abortion Funding Awareness Act exposes how states are funneling tax dollars to abortion providers,” Congresswoman Erin Houchin stated. She claims that for too long, there has been a lack of transparency that has allowed organizations like Planned Parenthood to benefit from what she refers to as loopholes.
Currently, federal restrictions are in place against direct funding of abortions. However, the new act alleges that states are redirecting taxpayer-funded Medicaid dollars to abortion providers without public knowledge. The act proposes that states report all Medicaid payments made to abortion providers, submit annual reports on these transactions, and publish this information on state websites.
“This legislation provides the transparency and accountability the American people deserve. I remain committed to defending rights of conscience and the integrity of taxpayer dollars,” Houchin added.
