Congresswoman Erin Houchin from Indiana and Congressman Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey have introduced a new piece of legislation, the Think Differently About Education Act. This bipartisan bill is designed to ensure that parents of children with disabilities are fully informed about their rights during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.
Currently, parents have the right to bring third-party advocates, such as therapists, lawyers, or knowledgeable family members, to these meetings. However, many are not aware of this option. The proposed legislation mandates that local educational agencies formally notify parents of this right.
"Parents are their child’s strongest advocates, and they deserve to have all the tools necessary to ensure their child receives the best education possible," said Congresswoman Houchin. "This bill provides clarity and transparency for families navigating the special education process. No parent should be left in the dark."
The Think Differently About Education Act builds on previous efforts in Congress where a similar bill was passed by the House. It aims to strengthen parental rights and enhance transparency so that families receive the support needed for advocating for their child's education.
