Congresswoman Erin Houchin of Indiana's 9th District, in collaboration with Virginia Foxx, Chairwoman of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, has requested a review by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). The focus is on special education services for children with disabilities attending private schools to identify potential under-identification issues.

This initiative seeks to address significant gaps in identifying and providing mandated services for students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Congresswoman Houchin emphasized the importance of equitable access to resources for all children with disabilities, regardless of their school's nature. "Children with disabilities deserve access to the resources and support they need, regardless of the type of school they attend," she stated. "It is unacceptable that students in private schools may be overlooked, leaving them without the assistance provided by federal law."

According to IDEA requirements, local educational agencies must evaluate all children with disabilities within their jurisdiction, including those enrolled in private schools by their parents. Research indicates that only 3 percent of private school students are identified as having disabilities under IDEA—this is below the estimated need range of 6 to 9 percent and significantly lower than the 13 percent identification rate observed among public school students.

"These discrepancies suggest widespread issues that must be addressed," Congresswoman Houchin added. "Through this review, we can ensure that children with disabilities in private schools are no longer left behind and receive the support they need, regardless of their educational setting."

Congresswoman Houchin continues her advocacy efforts for students with disabilities and their families, striving to ensure every child has an opportunity for success.
