Congresswoman Erin Houchin of Indiana's 9th District has co-signed a letter addressed to House Leadership, advocating for the reauthorization of the Farm Bill before the conclusion of the 118th Congress. The current policies, established in 2018, are considered outdated and are said to hinder the growth of the agricultural sector.
Since 2018, production expenses have reportedly increased by approximately 30%, while inflation-adjusted net cash farm income projections for 2024 are predicted to be at their lowest in 15 years. These conditions have prompted calls for updated provisions to support farmers, particularly those involved in major row crop production.
In May, the House Committee on Agriculture introduced the bipartisan Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2024. This legislation was developed with input from various stakeholders including farmers and ranchers through listening sessions and town hall meetings nationwide. The bill reflects over 2,600 priorities submitted by members of Congress and contributions from the entire Republican Conference.
The letter signed by Congresswoman Houchin and other Members emphasizes their commitment to passing a five-year Farm Bill that addresses the needs of production agriculture and rural America. "Reauthorizing the Farm Bill is critical to supporting our farmers and keeping our agricultural economy strong," stated Congresswoman Houchin. "I will continue to fight for policies that uplift our rural communities and that ensure our farmers and producers have the support they need to succeed."
