New Traffic Light And Safety Improvements Added To Brown Station Way

A project aimed at increasing pedestrian and motorist safety is coming to fruition this week in south Clarksville.  Beginning Monday afternoon, a new traffic light will be activated on Brown Station Way at Leuthart Drive.

The project includes the installation of a video detection traffic control signal with pedestrian crossing features, removal of the N. Clark Boulevard slip lane at Bowne Boulevard, installation of a sidewalk system from Bowne Bowne to the traffic signal, median improvements, and new landscaping.  The cost of the project was nearly $1.5 million.

“Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of being involved with several large projects throughout the Town, but this is by far the most important project that I have been involved with,” said Clarksville Public Works Director Brad Cummings.

The project also included the removal of what remains of a former pedestrian bridge that crossed over Brown Station Way.  The bridge was destroyed in 2018 when it was hit by a large truck.  That crash also claimed the life of the truck’s driver.  This was just one of several accidents in the area over the last decade.  As a result, the Town partnered with Clark Dietz Engineering to improve the safety and function of the intersection for both motorists and pedestrians.

“At the same time, we worked to provide a second means of egress to Brown Station Way for the Greenacres and Midway neighborhoods,” said Cummings.  “We also added minimal cosmetic features to improve the look of the corridor. I believe this project will accomplish all of our goals.”

The new traffic light is expected to begin operation late Monday afternoon.  The only remaining portions of the project are additional landscaping improvements, as well as the painting of the new fence.  Those portions of the project are expected to be completed by September.
