WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 15, 2024) - Congresswoman Erin Houchin has added her support to Texas in its legal battle with the Biden administration over immigration policies, joining over 40 lawmakers in signing an Amicus brief. The document, filed in the U.S. district court for the western district of Texas—Austin Division, accuses the federal government of neglecting its responsibilities at the border.

"I am proud to stand with my colleagues in supporting Texas' efforts to stop the chaos, secure the border, and protect Texans. The Constitution is on our side, and so are the American people," stated Congresswoman Houchin regarding her stance.

The dispute originated from a law enacted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, permitting state law enforcement officers to detain and prosecute illegal migrants. The Justice Department has contested this move, asserting that it falls within federal jurisdiction, resulting in a lawsuit against Texas.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Congresswoman Houchin remarked, "The Biden administration's lack of ability to contain the crisis at the border has made it necessary for border states like Texas to take action." She criticized President Biden for neglecting his duty to uphold national security and the rule of law.

The Amicus brief, spearheaded by Rep. Jodey Arrington of Texas, accuses the federal government of enabling "mass illegal entries" into the U.S. and impeding states' efforts to protect their borders. Congresswoman Houchin stressed the significance of safeguarding states' rights against federal intrusion, asserting, "Every state has the power to fend off the Biden Administration’s intentional illegal invasion."

In closing, Congresswoman Houchin commended Governor Abbott for his firm stance against what she described as President Biden’s border crisis, stating, "I applaud Governor Abbott for holding the line against President Biden’s self-inflicted border crisis."
