Congresswoman Erin Houchin recently testified before the House Transportation and Infrastructure committee regarding the erosion threatening the Clarksville shoreline along the Ohio River. Speaking before the committee, Houchin highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to secure the necessary support for the Clarksville Shoreline Stabilization Project. I remain committed to addressing this issue until it is resolved."
The erosion of the Clarksville shoreline has resulted in the loss of approximately 100 yards of Indiana's land since the completion of the lock and dam system in 1963. This erosion not only poses a threat to local businesses, roads, parks, and historical sites but also endangers the iconic George Rogers Clark home site, a significant historical location. Houchin emphasized the importance of this area, stating, "This area holds immense cultural significance as it symbolizes the starting point of their expedition."
Despite raising concerns with the Army Corps of Engineers, the required attention and action to address the issue have been lacking. To combat this pressing matter, Congresswoman Houchin is advocating for the prioritization of the Clarksville Shoreline Stabilization Project in the upcoming Water Resources Development Act reauthorization. Houchin stressed the importance of swift action, warning that further delays could result in increased losses for Indiana, impacting the local community and infrastructure.
In closing, Congresswoman Houchin urged the Army Corps of Engineers to take immediate action to safeguard the Clarksville shoreline and protect the historically significant area for the state of Indiana.
