Grenadiers Fall To St-Mary-Of-The-Woods 61-58, Ralph Scores 1,000th Career Point
Emmy Ralph scored a team high 22 points to become the 30th IU Southeast women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points, but it was St-Mary-of-the-Woods who prevailed 61-58 over IU Southeast on Tuesday.
The first quarter began with a Meredith Weiss basket to put the Grenadiers up 2-0. The quarter was tightly contested, as neither team was able to take a lead of more than four points. A layup by Lauren Lambdin gave the Grenadiers an 11-7 lead. SMWC ended the quarter with two free throws to cut the Grenadier lead to 15-14 after one quarter.
The Grenadiers used three straight points by Alex Maher to extend their lead to 18-14 to open the second quarter. After a SMWC free throw, Emmy Ralph hit back-to-back threes to extend the Grenadier advantage to 23-15. A Brynna Blackburn three gave IU Southeast their largest first half lead at 26-17. SMWC closed the second quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the IU Southeast lead to 30-29 at the half.
SMWC opened the third quarter with five straight points to take a 34-30 lead. A 5-0 run by SMWC later in the quarter extended their lead to eight at 42-34. Emmy Ralph hit two free throws to reach 1,000 career points, and Meredith Weiss added a free throw as well to cut the Grenadier deficit to five. SMWC closed the quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 51-41 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
The Grenadiers opened the fourth quarter with ten straight points to tie the game at 51-51. IU Southeast held SMWC scoreless for nearly four minutes to start the fourth quarter, but a 5-0 run gave the Pomeroys a 56-51 advantage. A 4-0 Grenadier run cut the lead to 56-55 with 2:48 remaining.
A layup gave SMWC a 58-55 lead, but the Grenadiers answered right back with a layup of their own to make it a one-point game once more. SMWC made it a 61-57 game with 1:10 remaining, but a Lauren Lambdin free throw cut the lead to three with one minute left in the contest.
SMWC grabbed a rebound following a missed Grenadier three with 13 seconds remaining, but IU Southeast forced a turnover to gain possession with nine seconds to go. A potential game-tying three-point attempt by Lauren Lambdin rimmed out, and SMWC grabbed the rebound to secure the 61-58 victory.
Emmy Ralph dished out a team-high four assists to go along with 22 points. Lauren Lambdin added 15 points in the contest. Meredith Weiss added seven points and six rebounds. Sierra Graham grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and Abby Young added three steals in the contest.
IU Southeast (6-3, 1-2 RSC) travels to conference foe IU Kokomo for an RSC matchup on Saturday.
