The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the SAVE America Act with a vote of 218–213. The legislation requires proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and mandates a valid photo ID for casting ballots. Representative Erin Houchin, who represents Indiana’s 9th district and is a cosponsor of the bill, stated, “The right to vote is one of the most sacred rights we have as Americans, and protecting it is not partisan. The SAVE America Act ensures that only American citizens are voting in American elections. Requiring proof of citizenship and voter ID strengthens trust in our system and ensures that our elections are fair and secure.”
Supporters say the act addresses gaps in enforcement despite existing federal laws prohibiting noncitizens from voting, by giving states more tools to maintain accurate voter rolls and prevent foreign interference.
Houchin has represented Indiana’s 9th district since 2023 after replacing Trey Hollingsworth (https://houchin.house.gov/about). Before joining Congress, she served in the Indiana Senate from 2014 to 2022 (https://www.congress.gov/member/erin-houchin/H001095). Houchin was born in Salem, Indiana in 1976 and currently resides there at age 46. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington.
Public polling shows broad bipartisan support for requirements related to voter identification.
The bill will now move on to the Senate for further consideration.
